Local pro Mike Wurm was considered a favorite this week, but he limped in with four fish for 7-06. He's currently in 90th place. "I caught them rigging and flipping. I lost my fifth fish twice. One time it jumped off. Another time it broke off." |

 "I had a couple of good practice days," Wurm said. "I checked a few things and I think I might know what's going on. Hopefully it'll pan out and I'll be able to catch them out of those places. But we have a high-water situation with water up in the bushes and trees, so there's a lot more going on than what I'd have hoped for. I'd rather have the water down. Now, at least two or three different patterns are working." But he did note that he doesn't think bushes are the winning pattern by themselves. After catching limits each of the first two days, pro Mike Wurm managed only three bass each of the last two days. His day-four catch weighed 8 pounds, 10 ounces and pushed his total weight to 46 pounds, 6 ounces. Two of the fish were largemouths – the other a spotted bass. For third place, Wurm earned $30,000.
“Overall, I’m pretty proud of myself,” said the Hot Springs, Ark., native. “I found a real good pattern, and I executed every day. The last two days I think they started moving – probably up the creek. I could have depleted the area too.”
Wurm dragged a small Eakins’ jig with a Zoom Critter Craw on the bottom of the White River. At times he worked the jig so slow he was barely moving it. This was the exact method he used to win the 1999 FLW Tour qualifier on Lake Murray. One of his keys this week was using 10-pound braid with a 10-pound fluorocarbon leader. It helped him pull fish out of the timber and improved his hook-set ratio.
“It was really important to barely move the jig. If you so much as lifted it, that means you were fishing it too fast. You’ve got to remember these fish are cold. And when they’re cold, they don’t want to move very much – just like us.” Complete Story |

Even though Wurm finished 10 pounds in back of Shuffield and 23 1/2 pounds in back of Ehrler, he's happy with a Top 5. "Actually, I'm very pleased," Wurm said. "I accomplished more than I ever should have with what I found. This is really the first tournament of the year, and to get 3rd place – I'm tickled to death. I'm excited to be back with FLW – it's a totally different feeling and atmosphere (than BASS). I'm glad to be back and I'm looking forward to the rest of the year." Complete Story |

After demonstrating remarkable consistency each of the first two days, pro Mike Wurm fell back a bit today and caught only three bass for 7 pounds, 9 ounces. With one day remaining, his total weight stands at 37 pounds, 12 ounces.
“I only had three keeper bites today,” said Wurm, who also caught five short fish. “I think they started moving – probably up the creek. I could have depleted the area too.”
